Rosy, Rosy Roseola

Charlotte got sick again last Friday. Her temperature was up to 102.5 and then hovered between 99 and 100 for the rest of the weekend.  She was in remarkably good spirits considering.  On Sunday, we noticed that she had a lacey pink rash all over her back.  By Monday morning it had spread to her stomach, upper thighs, forehead, arms, and shoulders.  The fever, however, was gone.

I looked up the symptoms and thought they sounded like roseola apart from the fact that roseola usually occurs after much higher fevers (103 to 105).

As we're heading to DC tomorrow, I decided it would be good to get her checked out by the doctor.  At the doctor's office, Charlotte's rash had turned bright red on her back with bright red splotches on her thighs, legs and bottom.  The doctor also thought it was roseola, but didn't diagnose as such given the lower fever.  She basically said nothing could be done, it was a virus and would clear up in a few days, but that if Charlotte started getting bothered we could administer a tiny dose of Benadryl.  The doctor advised me to give it to her the day before the plane trip because apparently in 5 percent of children, Benadryl causes hyperactivity instead of sedation.  Definitely would NOT want that.

In other news, we thought it would be cute to plop Charlotte down in our circular laundry basket.  She played with the socks in there and then, unexpectedly, grabbed the sides of the basket and pulled herself up.  All by herself!  Chris and I were stunned, immediately pulled out the video camera, but she was unwilling to repeat it for actual proof. Typical!  Since then, she has basically tried to pull herself up everytime I grab her hands.  She wants to stand all the time.

We're off to DC tomorrow.  I'm already exhausted.

8 Months

Dear Charlotte,

You're 8 months old today!  You've had a pretty fun month, although it was marked by your first real fever and illness.  Still, you got through that like a champ and moved on to being your normal happy, smiling self.

This month, you've perfected the army crawl and are so close to learning that you could probably go much faster if you just stayed on your hands and knees.  You even crawled to Tandy's bowl and snatched up a handful of catfood before I could stop you.  And you put your hand in Tandy's water dish and splashed about, which I found gross, but you apparently quite enjoyed.

You are also so close to being able to sit up on your own (you sit there fine if we plop you upright, but you haven't quite figured out how to go from crawling to sitting).  You love peek-a-boo.  Your daddy and I will hide below the crib and pop up and you just laugh and laugh.  You figured out pretty quickly that if you pull down the bumper you can see us.  You're pretty proud of yourself.

You've had a very long stretch of 12 hour plus sleeping, dotted with times where you're up screaming and inconsolable, but those times are rare. And during those 12 hours stretches, more often than not, we actually wake you up.  Daddy and I are very thankful for the extra sleep!

Your daycare lady swears that you wave and say "bye-bye" but I'm calling shenanigans as neither Daddy nor I have witnessed this.  You do open and close your hands in a waving-type motion, but it seems to have nothing to do with waving hello or goodbye.  It's still pretty cute though.  You babble all the time and your favorite string of consonants is "da-da."  Daddy is pretty tickled pink by that.

And oh my gosh!  We finally have signs of a tooth!  I thought it was some white food hanging on your upper gums, but no, it's a little bit of tooth poking out.  I swore when you were four months old that you were already teething (I got my first tooth at barely four months, but your Daddy was a late teether), but I guess not.  Maybe by 9 months, that tooth will have fully erupted.  In the meantime, you're pretty good at using your gums to mash up little pieces of food - you love cheese and bread just like Mommy, and you love hummus!

And here's a picture of you standing up, holding on to the ottoman.  You've been able to do this for three months or so, but only for a few seconds.  Now you love standing up and have figured out how to keep yourself upright if you start to topple over!

We love you a lot!

Love,

Mommy and Daddy

Hurray for Sunny, Warm Weather

Not much to report. Work has been super busy, as I'm preparing for my organization's annual lobbying trip to DC next week (EEK!!). Chris and Charlotte are coming with me, which is really nice because otherwise it probably meant that I'd be weaning Charlotte, and neither of us is ready for that.  While I'm busy discussing health care policy with California's congressional delegation, Chris and Charlotte will be exploring all the amazing and free museums in our nation's capital.  One of my colleagues who works in the Bay Area is bringing her husband and baby daughter as well (she's only 10 days younger than Charlotte), so maybe the four of them will hang out while we're working.  And the National Zoo is just up the street from our hotel, which is also free.  I should have a few periods of time when I won't have things to do, so I hope I can go to a few different places with them. Now if could somehow guarantee that the weather will cooperate...

Chris and I did get to go out for our half-anniversary and Valentine's Day on Thursday night. We made the decision three years ago that since our half-anniversary is just two days before Valentine's Day we'd make that our day to celebrate instead. That way we don't have to deal with the crowds but still get a chance to go out to a nice meal. Our next door neighbors watched Charlotte, and we headed out to Biba, a Sacramento staple. Biba is named after the owner, Biba, who grew up in Italy and opened her Italian restaurant in 1986. Since then, Biba (the lady and the restaurant) has taken off -- Biba has hosted cooking shows, sold hundreds of thousands of cookbooks, and her restaurant always gets glowing reviews.

In short, the food was amazing. Thursday and Friday nights they serve Biba's signature lasagna, so of course we had to order it. Light, thin layers of homemade spinach lasagna pasta with the most delicious ragu ever.  We split that and the Osso Buco, which is something I hope to try with my new Le Creuset Dutch Oven.  It was also superb.  Biba herself was there, making the rounds and ensuring that everyone was having a great time.  Overall, a wonderful meal.

This long weekend was a nice break.  The weather was amazing -- mid-60s and higher each day.  I just had to take Charlotte to the park on Sunday, where she enjoyed the sun, the swing, the slide and the grass.

Checking out the slide

This green stuff is very interesting!

Obviously, Charlotte had a great time considering that I couldn't even get her to look at me.  That grass was just so amazing.

Coming up next: Imagining what winter sport Charlotte will win a medal at in the 2030 Olympics.  Her cousine in France is apparently quite the amazing biathlete (you know, the cross country skiing combined with shooting a target!).  I'm thinking moguls, but Chris is sure she'll be great at the snowboarding cross.
