Warning: This is the first of several posts to come because a lot has happened in the past few days!
First, I hope everyone had a lovely Easter. We spent our Easter weekend enjoying a last weekend away together before our little one comes. Originally the plan was to go somewhere in wine country, but seeing as how there is little for a pregnant woman to do when it comes to wine (except, maybe whining!), we opted for a seaside getaway instead.
We chose Gualala (the locals pronounce it Wa-LA-la -- it's a Native American name), which is along the gorgeous Pacific Coast Highway in Mendocino County. The entire drive West from the 101 was gorgeous -- we drove along the Russian River all the way to the coast. Northern California really is an amazing place with so much geographic diversity. I may simply be hormonal, but I was actually tearing up at times because of how beautiful everything was. The weather cooperated wonderfully -- cool and breezy, but sunny the entire time.
Chris and I stayed at a very nice inn right in the little town of Gualala. Our room had a king-sized four poster bed, a little seating area, and a glass fireplace. The view from the room was spectacular. The only downside was that we chose a room on the middle story and the ceilings/floors were not well insulated. We were woken up both nights to the sound of some very loud creaking above us. Not exactly the kind of noise you want to be waken up to on your babymoon... :)
We didn't do a whole lot other than watch movies, take short walks (can't really manage anything long, unfortunately), and eat lots of food. Probably the best part of the weekend was on the drive back down where we stopped at this inn advertising a Sunday brunch buffet. The inn that we stayed at advertised a "deluxe continential breakfast," but that turned out to be nothing more than pre-packaged muffins and bagels. Not exactly the meal I wanted to eat on Easter. The place we stopped at turned out to be perfect. We had an oceanfront seating, and the food was amazing! From the orange-infused French toast to the local sheep's milk yogurt to the omelet bar, everything was fresh and delicious. And if you've never tried sheep's milk yogurt, it is absolutely delectable. I went to the grocery store when we got home only to discover that one little cup of this yogurt from Sonoma County is $2.50! Yeesh.
In all, it was a really nice weekend. We'll definitely return to Gualala someday, although we'll be sure to request a top-floor room. :)
